Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has dumped his former political platform and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging to mobilise nationwide support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Abubakar was formally received into the ruling party on Thursday in Abuja by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and the APC National Vice-Chairman (North-East), Mustafa Salihu.
Announcing his defection, Abba also disclosed the renaming of his political platform, formerly known as the Atiku Haske Organisation, to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, directing all members and coordinators to immediately align with the APC.
“My name is Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, popularly called Abba. I am here to formally announce my exit from my former party and my decision to join the APC,” he said.
“I have taken this step after observing the leadership style of Senator Barau Jibrin and the developmental strides of President Bola Tinubu. I will work with Senator Barau to ensure the actualisation of Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027.”
Welcoming the new entrant, Salihu described the defection as significant, saying it reflected growing confidence in the APC-led administration.
“Today is one of my happiest days. We are moving beyond old political divisions. This young man has studied the policies of the Tinubu administration and chosen to identify with progress,” he stated.
Salihu assured Abba of equal opportunities within the party, stressing that the APC was guided by ideology and commitment to national development rather than personal interests.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin commended Abubakar for what he called a courageous and principled decision.
“You did not come here because of your father; you came because you believe in President Tinubu and his Renewed Hope agenda,” Barau said.
He added that Abba, who had followed developments from abroad, was convinced that the Tinubu administration was on the right path.
“He is young, focused and determined to contribute to nation-building. This is the kind of youth leadership Nigeria needs,” the lawmaker noted.
The APC has in recent months recorded an influx of defections from opposition parties as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
National Secretary of the party, Senator Ajibola Basiru, recently disclosed that the APC’s ongoing digital membership registration would raise its verified members to between eight and nine million within two weeks.
