Rivers Crisis: I’m Calm Because God Is With Me, Says Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has declared that he remains calm amid the raging political crisis in the state because of his strong faith in God, expressing confidence that peace will soon return.

Fubara spoke on Sunday at an interdenominational church service held to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt.

The governor, who attended the service alongside his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, addressed worshippers shortly after prayers were offered for the state leadership. However, he handed over the microphone to his deputy to speak on his behalf, explaining that his message would be brief.

In a light-hearted remark, Fubara told the congregation that the service might turn out to be the last public function he and his deputy would attend together, a comment that drew mixed reactions from the audience.

Urging residents to remain calm, the governor assured that the present political tension would not derail governance in the state.

“Let me say it clearly: dogs bark when they do not understand,” Fubara said.

“Many people do not understand why I do not shout or complain. It is because I know that I have what is supreme — God.

“I want everyone to relax. What matters most is peace in this dear state, and by the special grace of God, we will achieve it.”

The governor’s remarks came against the backdrop of impeachment proceedings initiated last Thursday by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly against him and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.

The impeachment notice was reportedly endorsed by 26 lawmakers.

The Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, accused the governor and his deputy of actions allegedly capable of undermining democracy, including failure to present the 2026 budget in line with constitutional requirements.

The unfolding crisis has heightened political tension in the oil-rich state, with residents and stakeholders closely watching developments at the Assembly.
