The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The move followed the presentation of a notice of allegations bordering on gross misconduct against the governor during plenary presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.
The notice was laid before the House by the Majority Leader, Major Jack, in line with the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to the lawmakers, the allegations include the unauthorised demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary expenditures, withholding of funds meant for the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission, and failure to comply with Supreme Court judgments granting financial autonomy to the legislature.
It was gathered that no fewer than 26 members of the Assembly signed the impeachment notice, thereby meeting the constitutional requirement to commence the process.
The Speaker subsequently directed that the notice be served on the governor and his deputy, marking the formal commencement of the impeachment procedure.
