Oyo govt suspends Ofiki monarch over alleged illegal mining

The Oyo State Government has suspended the Sobaloju of Ofiki, Oba Jacob Adefabi, over alleged involvement in illegal mining activities within Atisbo Local Government Area.

The suspension was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by Moses Alao, Special Assistant to the Governor on Print Media. According to the statement, the traditional ruler was sanctioned for allegedly violating Executive Order 001 of 2023, which regulates mining activities across the state, and for encouraging trespass on government-gazetted assets.

The government accused the monarch of issuing consent letters to mining companies without the required authorisation, thereby permitting mining operations in a government-reserved forest. He was also alleged to have facilitated unauthorised mining activities in the area.

A letter signed by A. M. Olajire, Director of Chieftaincy Matters in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, stated that the suspension takes effect from January 5, 2026. The letter directed the monarch to vacate the palace of the Onitọ of Itọ pending the outcome of investigations into the allegations.

The government explained that the action was a precautionary measure aimed at protecting the community, safeguarding state assets and ensuring the integrity of the investigation.

Oba Adefabi has also been directed to desist from all mining-related activities, avoid interfering with the investigation and make himself available to the investigative panel when required.

The state government reiterated its commitment to enforcing mining regulations and preventing illegal exploitation of natural resources across Oyo State.
