Abia People Will Decide 2027 Governorship, Otti Tells Orji Kalu

 

The Abia State Government has dismissed claims credited to the Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, that he would deliver the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 governorship election, insisting that the power to choose the next governor rests with the people, not political actors.

In a statement issued on Monday, the government acknowledged Senator Kalu’s constitutional right to canvass support for any candidate of his choice, including a member of his family, under the platform of the APC.

However, the government stressed that such political ambitions must align with democratic principles, noting that Abians would not accept any attempt to impose leadership or convert the state into what it described as a “family fiefdom.”

The statement warned against efforts by any individual or family to simultaneously dominate key political and public service positions, including the offices of Senator, Governor, Commissioner representing Abia State in the National Assembly Service Commission, and Ambassador.

According to the government, Abia voters have historically resisted political monopolies and will continue to defend their right to freely choose leaders based on competence, fairness, and service to the people.

Reaffirming its status as the ruling party in the state, the Labour Party disclosed that it has more than three qualified, credible, and well-prepared aspirants ready to contest for the party’s ticket for the Abia North Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections.

The government noted that the availability of multiple aspirants underscores the party’s commitment to internal democracy, inclusiveness, and merit-based leadership.

It assured that, at the appropriate time, the Labour Party would mobilise its members, supporters, and stakeholders across the state to rally behind its chosen candidates.

The statement also called on Abia residents to reject all forms of political domination and support a future driven by equity, collective progress, and people-oriented governance.
