Obidient Movement insists: Peter Obi’s ambition is presidency, nothing less

The Obidient Movement has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Peter Obi’s presidential ambition, stressing that it is not mobilised to back him as a vice-presidential candidate under any political arrangement.

The movement made the clarification following widespread speculation triggered by comments credited to its National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, after he said the group would remain in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and respect the outcome of its presidential primary.

Tanko had stated in an interview that the Obidient Movement would take “democratic decisions” should former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerge as the ADC’s presidential candidate.

“We will remain in the party and give the party the lease of life it demands democratically,” he said.

The remarks, however, fuelled reports suggesting that the movement might consider supporting Obi as a vice-presidential candidate if he fails to clinch the party’s presidential ticket.

In a swift response, the Obidient Movement dismissed such reports as “deliberate misrepresentations and malicious propaganda.”

In a statement, the group described itself as an organic, nationwide, and values-driven democratic movement committed to good governance, accountability and the rule of law.

It declared that its ideals, energy and collective resolve remain firmly focused on the presidential aspiration of Peter Obi.

“The Obidient Movement can join any political party of its choice that aligns with the person, principles and leadership vision of Mr Peter Obi,” the statement read.

The group added: “Let it be stated clearly and without ambiguity: the Obidient Movement is not mobilised to support Mr Peter Obi as a vice-presidential candidate for anyone. Our support is exclusively for his emergence as President of Nigeria.”

The movement disclosed that it is currently backing Obi on the platform of the ADC in its contest for the party’s presidential ticket, noting that it would respect the outcome of the process if it is transparent, credible and fair.

However, it warned that any compromised process would compel the movement to take a united, lawful and democratic decision in line with its core principles.

The group further emphasised that wherever Obi, acting within the law and guided by conscience, decides to pursue his presidential mandate, the Obidient Movement would follow.

“Our loyalty is to his leadership vision and to Nigeria’s national redemption — not to political convenience or compromised platforms,” it stated.

The movement concluded by reaffirming its belief that an Obi presidency remains the surest path to national renewal and accountable governance.
