Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has described the United Nations (UN) as a weak and ineffective body in the wake of the United States’ military action in Venezuela.
Sani made the assertion on Saturday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle while reacting to reports of the capture of Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife following the U.S. invasion ordered by President Donald Trump.
According to the former lawmaker, the global body has become powerless in the face of unchecked foreign aggression.
“The UN is now a docile, dormant, moribund and helpless organisation,” Sani wrote. “We now live in a world where might is right and world leaders are bullied into silence.”
He lamented what he described as the muted response of the international community, particularly European leaders, to what he termed a blatant violation of international law.
“In the face of outright foreign aggression and invasion of Venezuela, even European leaders are merely saying they are closely monitoring the situation,” he added.
Sani noted that while current global leaders may choose silence, history would judge their actions or inaction.
“The good side of this is that one day our children will review our posts and records and see where we stood on these illegal acts of aggression,” he said.
The U.S. action in Venezuela has continued to draw widespread condemnation and concern from political leaders, rights groups and international organisations across the world.
