The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, has officially recognised Governor Sim Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers State.
The declaration comes amid a renewed political tussle between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over control of the state’s political structure.
After joining the APC, Fubara had claimed the position of No. 001 in the state, a move rejected by Wike, who insisted that he remains the key power broker in Rivers politics. The PDP and APC, he noted, have joined forces to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Hard Copy, Yilwatda said the party chairman would back Fubara for a second term, but only if he wins the APC primary.
“Governor Fubara is the leader of the APC in Rivers State, but he must coordinate with all stakeholders,” Yilwatda said. “I don’t dictate the outcome of the primaries. If Fubara emerges as the APC candidate, I will support him. If not, I will work with whoever wins the primary.”
The APC National Chairman’s statement is expected to settle, at least temporarily, the ongoing friction between Fubara and Wike as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
