Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has admitted that sustaining high-pressure football for an entire 90 minutes remains a major challenge, despite Nigeria’s impressive 3-2 victory over Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday.
Nigeria dominated the encounter for large spells, racing into a comfortable lead through goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman, before defensive lapses in the closing stages allowed the Tunisians to score twice.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chelle expressed satisfaction with the overall performance but acknowledged the need for improvement, particularly in the final 15 minutes of games.
According to the Franco-Malian tactician, while his ambition is to build a team capable of pressing relentlessly throughout a match, such a demand is unrealistic in modern football.
“We deserved this victory. At halftime, we had about 70 per cent possession, and until the 75th minute, we were clearly the better team,” Chelle said.
“I am very proud of my players. We controlled the game well, but we must improve how we manage the last 15 minutes. Playing high-pressure football for the full 90 minutes is impossible. It is my dream and vision, but the reality of football makes it very difficult.”
The victory keeps the Super Eagles top of Group C with six points, confirming their qualification for the knockout stage ahead of their final group match against Uganda on Tuesday.
Chelle, however, stressed that lessons must be learnt quickly as the competition enters its decisive phase, warning that late lapses could prove costly against stronger opponents.
