Reps Launch Probe Into Alleged Changes to Tax Laws

The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into claims that the tax reform laws recently passed by the National Assembly were altered.

House spokesman, Akin Rotimi, disclosed on Friday that a seven-member ad hoc committee has been set up by the House leadership to probe the matter.

Rotimi explained that the probe covers concerns raised over the legislative process, presidential assent, and the versions of the following Acts published in the Official Gazette: Nigeria Tax Act, 2025; Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025; Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025; and Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025.

“The review aims to verify the sequence of events, identify potential lapses, and ensure the integrity of the legislative record,” Rotimi said. He added that the investigation will be conducted in strict compliance with the Constitution, the Acts Authentication Act, and parliamentary rules.

As part of the process, the National Assembly has directed the Clerk to re-gazette the Acts and issue Certified True Copies of the versions passed by both Chambers. Rotimi emphasized that the review focuses solely on procedural and administrative processes and does not suggest any defect in the legislative authority of the House or Senate.

The House leadership urged the public to allow the institutional process to proceed without speculation. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, due process, and the rule of law.

The announcement follows public concern and calls from opposition parties for the suspension of the laws, which are slated to take effect from January 1, 2026.
