The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Christopher Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.
Musa’s nomination was approved following a rigorous screening in which senators examined his military experience and responses on key security challenges.
Addressing the lawmakers, Musa pledged to serve the nation diligently. “The security challenges we face are Nigerian challenges, not solely those of the armed forces. We must all work together as a team,” he said.
He emphasized the need for better coordination among service chiefs and security agencies, noting existing gaps and constitutional limitations affecting operations. “Even during my tenure as CDS, I prioritized harmonizing all teams. Moving forward, we will ensure everyone is on board,” Musa added.
Musa also advocated for the creation of a comprehensive and unified national database to enhance intelligence and operational efficiency for security agencies. He called for proactive involvement from local and state governments and the legal system in tackling insecurity.
On ransom payments to kidnappers and terrorists, Musa was firm. “There should be no negotiation with criminals. They will never honor agreements and use the proceeds to fund more attacks,” he said.
Regarding claims of targeted attacks on specific religious groups, Musa maintained that all Nigerians are victims of terrorism. “These are evil actors, often under the influence of drugs, who kill indiscriminately. We must unite to stop the killings,” he said.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended Musa for his detailed responses. “I have not seen a nominee answer all questions as thoroughly since 1999. We urge him to visit the defence industries promptly after assuming office,” Akpabio said.
Musa’s confirmation was put to a voice vote, receiving unanimous approval from the Senate.
