Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that he feels privileged to be a Catholic and described himself as the highest-ranking Christian in Nigeria’s government.
Speaking during the blessing and inauguration of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Saturday, Akpabio credited his political ascent to divine favour. He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith, noting that dedication to God can help individuals rise from modest beginnings to positions of influence.
“As the most ranked Christian in government, God has graciously shaped and prepared me for this assignment,” Akpabio said. He also highlighted that even small contributions toward church development carry spiritual value, adding: “If your 10 kobo helps complete a church building, be assured God has accepted it.”
The Senate President, whose tenure has been marked by controversies and persistent calls for his removal, has weathered numerous political storms. Observers have attributed his continued stay in office partly to the support of President Bola Tinubu and compromises within the Senate.
Plans, Akpabio revealed, are ongoing to commission a new worship centre within the National Assembly complex, which will provide lawmakers with a dedicated space for prayer.
The event was attended by senior clerics and political figures. The Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev. John Ayah, praised Akpabio and his wife for their consistent support of the church, including hosting Catholic bishops during their national meeting in Ikot Ekpene last year. He advised the Senate President to disregard critics, noting that prominence inevitably attracts scrutiny.
