Nigeria Misses Back-to-Back World Cups After DR Congo Defeat

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the first time the national team has missed two consecutive World Cups since their debut in 1994.

The Eagles were eliminated by DR Congo in a dramatic penalty shootout in the African playoff final on Sunday. Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive spot-kick to send the Congolese Leopards through to the intercontinental playoffs.

Stanley Nwabali, Nigeria’s goalkeeper, made two crucial saves in the shootout, but missed penalties from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi proved costly.

The Eagles had taken an early lead in the 3rd minute when Frank Onyeka struck from distance, his effort deflecting off a Congolese defender into the net. However, DR Congo responded in the 32nd minute through Mechak Elia, who capitalised on a quick counterattack after Alex Iwobi lost possession.

Nigeria’s cohesion fell apart after the break, especially when star striker Victor Osimhen was forced off due to injury, replaced by Adams Akor. The midfield was dominated by the Congolese, with Ndidi struggling to influence play and Iwobi looking uncertain.

Coach Eric Chelle made tactical substitutions, bringing on Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman to inject pace and width, but the changes only highlighted the team’s overreliance on Osimhen. Later introduction of Tolu Arokodare yielded little in attack.

Defensively, only Calvin Bassey and Benjamin Fredrick kept the Congolese at bay until the penalty shootout, where DR Congo ultimately triumphed.

The Super Eagles’ consecutive World Cup misses have sparked fresh debates over the state of Nigerian football and the need for urgent reforms ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
