Tension heightened on Monday as the two feuding factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled parallel meetings for Tuesday, both insisting on using the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The faction led by the newly elected National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, confirmed that its National Working Committee (NWC) would hold its inaugural session at the secretariat. Turaki, after meeting with the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police had been duly notified and placed on alert ahead of the gathering.
“We came here to interface with the Commissioner of Police regarding our inaugural NWC meeting, to which we have invited our governors, our National Assembly members, and our founding fathers,” Turaki told journalists.
However, the rival bloc loyal to Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, had earlier declared its intention to convene concurrent meetings of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) at the same venue and date — setting the stage for a potential confrontation.
Security agencies are said to be monitoring the situation closely, with police authorities reportedly preparing preventive measures to avert any breakdown of law and order.
