ADC Moves to Consolidate Opposition Role, Opens New National Secretariat in Abuja Today

 

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is set to deepen its footprint in the nation’s political landscape as it unveils its new national secretariat today in Abuja — a move party leaders describe as a major milestone in its bid to position itself as Nigeria’s foremost opposition force.

For months now, the party has operated from the private residence of its National Chairman, former Senate President David Mark, in the Apo Legislative Quarters. But with the commissioning of a modern complex in Wuse II, the ADC says it is entering a new phase of institutional growth and national reach.

The new edifice, located in Abuja’s bustling commercial hub, previously served as the 2023 presidential campaign headquarters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. According to a statement released yesterday, the party confirmed its relocation and noted that the new office reflects its expanding organisational strength.

The ADC gained renewed national attention in July following a sweeping restructuring that saw the former National Working Committee (NWC) led by Ralph Nwosu step aside for a fresh leadership cadre. The transition installed Mark as National Chairman, while former Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, assumed the role of National Secretary. Seasoned journalist and ex-minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, emerged as National Publicity Secretary.

Since the shake-up, the ADC has increasingly stepped into the vacuum created by the waning influence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which continues to grapple with deep internal fissures. The party’s sharper policy positions and more coordinated interventions on national issues have strengthened its profile as a revitalised opposition platform.

Insiders report that several political heavyweights from both the APC and PDP camps have begun making overtures to the party. Although former Vice President Atiku is believed in some quarters to be playing a role in the ADC’s resurgence, the extent of his involvement remains uncertain.

Today’s unveiling comes at a time the PDP is battling deepening fractures that have weakened its organisational cohesion and undermined its challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

With a new headquarters and an invigorated leadership structure, the ADC appears poised to stake a stronger claim in Nigeria’s evolving political arena.
