The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended two former principal officers over allegations of gross misconduct.
On Tuesday, the Assembly suspended former Majority Leader, Mr. Saater Tiseer (APC, Mbagwa), for six months, and former Minority Leader, Mr. Michael Audu (PDP, Adoka-Ugboju), for three months.
The decision followed a motion moved by the current Majority Leader, Mr. Thomas Dugeri (APC, Kwande West), during plenary at the Assembly complex in Makurdi.
Dugeri explained that the conduct of the former leaders while in office had brought the House into disrepute. According to him, the findings of an ad hoc committee set up to investigate their activities revealed that both men had allegedly used their offices for personal gain—actions contrary to the oaths of office and membership they had sworn to uphold.
“The Assembly has a responsibility to discipline any member found guilty of gross misconduct or dereliction of duty that could tarnish the image of this institution,” Dugeri stated.
The motion was seconded by Dr. Elias Audu (APC, Gwer East), who stressed the importance of House stability for the overall stability of the state. He urged the House to constitute a special committee to work with the Ethics Committee to probe further into the matter.
In his ruling, Speaker Mr. Alfred Emberga noted that the suspension was intended to serve as a deterrent to other members.
