The Osun State House of Assembly has passed two significant bills — the Osun State Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill 2025 and the Osun State Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill 2025.
The bills, according to the legislature, are aimed at strengthening the state’s social structure and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, disclosed that the passage followed the consideration and clause-by-clause adoption of the House Committee reports during plenary, presided over by Speaker Adewale Egbedun at the Assembly Complex, Osogbo.
The Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill, sponsored by Hon. Lawal Bamidele Rasheed as a private member’s bill, seeks to provide legal recognition, documentation, and protection for marriages conducted under Islamic and traditional rites in the state.
The statement read in part: “This legislation aligns with our cultural and religious values while ensuring that marriages conducted within Osun State are duly recognised and protected under the law.”
On the other hand, the Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill, which originated from the executive, establishes a legal and institutional framework for the formation and management of Water Users’ Associations (WUAs).
The law, the statement added, is expected to empower farmers and rural communities to manage irrigation systems efficiently, improve water distribution, enhance crop yield, and boost food security.
Clean copies of the two bills, according to the Assembly, will be forwarded to Governor Ademola Adeleke for assent.
