President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday met with the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The visit comes on the heels of the recent allegation by former United States President Donald Trump, who accused the Nigerian government of overseeing what he described as a “Christian genocide” and consequently placed the country on America’s list of “Countries of Particular Concern.”
Trump had further threatened possible U.S. military intervention should the killings persist — a statement that has generated widespread controversy both within and outside Nigeria.
Sources at the Villa confirmed the meeting between Tinubu and Archbishop Kaigama, though details of their discussion were yet to be disclosed as of press time. The Presidency has also not issued an official statement on the visit.
The Federal Government had earlier dismissed Trump’s claims as unfounded, insisting that Nigerians of all faiths coexist peacefully and that the nation remains committed to upholding religious freedom.
The Archbishop’s visit is believed to be connected to recent international concerns over Nigeria’s religious harmony and the government’s response to the allegations.
