The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intervened in the party’s ongoing leadership tussle by constituting a six-member reconciliation committee.
The committee, chaired by Ambassador Hassan Adamu, comprises one representative from each of the six geopolitical zones. It is mandated to reconcile the two factions within the National Working Committee (NWC) and restore harmony ahead of the party’s planned National Elective Convention in Ibadan on November 15.
Crisis deepened last week when the NWC, led by National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum, suspended National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and three others over alleged anti-party activities. In a counter move, Anyanwu and four NWC members announced the suspension of Damagum and five national officers, accusing them of incompetence and poor leadership.
Following an emergency meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the BoT, chaired by Senator Adolphus Wabara, urged both camps to sheath their swords and allow the reconciliation process to prevail.
While reaffirming its neutrality, the BoT declared that the PDP remains united under the Damagum-led NWC. It also hailed the recent Oyo State High Court ruling affirming the party’s right to manage its internal affairs without external interference.
The BoT stressed that the peace initiative is crucial to ensuring a smooth and credible national convention.
