A federal lawmaker, Hon. Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, representing Borgu/Agwara Federal Constituency in Niger State, narrowly survived an assassination attempt on Tuesday along the Lumma–Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area.
The lawmaker was travelling to Babanna for an official engagement when his convoy came under attack by suspected bandits, locally referred to as “Lakurawa terrorists.”
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen opened fire on the convoy in the afternoon, catching the security team off guard. Security personnel swiftly retaliated, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that left one soldier dead. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. A number of political supporters were also hurt during the incident.
The attackers’ onslaught left significant damage, with at least 11 vehicles riddled with bullets before being cleared from the scene. Despite the chaos, Damisa emerged unscathed.
Local residents and security sources condemned the attack, calling for urgent measures to curb the activities of armed bandits in the area.
