Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take a firm diplomatic stance against the United States following President Donald Trump’s reported threat of military action against Nigeria.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page yesterday, Gumi described Trump’s remark as “an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty”, insisting that the Federal Government must not take the comment lightly.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority. Nigeria must respond appropriately and assert her dignity among nations,” he wrote.
Gumi urged the Federal Government to summon the U.S. ambassador for clarification and demand a formal retraction of the threat. According to him, failure by Washington to withdraw the statement should compel Nigeria to review its diplomatic relations with the United States.
“President Tinubu should summon the U.S. ambassador immediately. If the threat is not withdrawn, Nigeria should consider cutting diplomatic ties with this reckless administration,” Gumi stated.
The cleric further advised the Federal Government to diversify its international partnerships, stressing that Nigeria has numerous global options for both economic cooperation and military collaboration.
“There are many other countries and alliances Nigeria can work with for economic development and defense support,” he added.
Gumi’s comment follows a wave of reactions from Nigerian leaders and civil society groups condemning Trump’s remark. Earlier, Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, and the Nigerian Youth Council had separately criticized the U.S. president’s statement, describing it as provocative and unacceptable.
