Enugu Reps Dump LP, PDP for APC in Major Political Realignment
In what observers have described as a major political shift, the entire Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives yesterday defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection, formally announced by Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, involved six lawmakers elected on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) and one from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Announcing their decision, the lawmakers attributed their move to what they called “unresolved internal crises” in their former parties.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State was present at the ceremony in Abuja, where the lawmakers pledged to work with the state government to advance ongoing development initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Nnolim Nnaji, who represents Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency, said the group’s decision was driven by a desire to align with the “project-oriented vision” of the Enugu State government.
“We want to bring Enugu closer to the centre and contribute meaningfully to shaping Nigeria’s destiny,” Nnaji stated. “This is a bold step into the future—anchored on courage, clarity, and commitment to the growth of our state.”
Other defectors include Martins Oke, Anayo Onwuegbu, Nnamdi Agbo, Mark Obetta, and Chimaobi Atu.
In a related move, Daniel Asama, representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency in Plateau State, also dumped the Labour Party for the APC.
With this development, the APC now commands the entire Enugu caucus in the House of Representatives—marking a significant boost for the ruling party in the South East.
Political analysts say the mass defection could reshape the region’s political balance ahead of future elections.
