The All Progressives Congress (APC) has revealed that it is in advanced talks with at least four sitting governors from opposition parties, with the aim of welcoming them into the ruling party before the end of 2025. The move is seen as part of the APC’s strategy to consolidate its dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), disclosed this in an interview, naming the governors of Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, and Abia (Labour Party) as those currently being courted.
“The possibility of these governors joining our party is very high,” Arodiogbu said. “We expect Plateau and Taraba governors to join us, and we are hopeful that Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Abia State Governor Alex Otti will also come on board.”
According to the APC vice chairman, the timeline for these defections is set for the coming weeks, before the party’s 2025 congresses. He stressed that these developments would further cement APC’s position as the most organized and dominant political platform in Nigeria.
“The APC has become a home for all progressives,” Arodiogbu said. “It is not only about expanding in numbers but also attracting quality leadership. Governors and other political leaders increasingly recognize that APC offers stability and direction for Nigeria’s democracy.”
He added that the party’s open-door policy and inclusive dialogue reflect its alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “The national chairman has made it clear that APC doors are open to anyone who believes in the vision for a united and progressive Nigeria,” Arodiogbu emphasized.
Observers note that these potential defections could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, giving the APC an edge as it seeks to strengthen its influence across the federation.
