Plateau APC Challenges Governor Mutfwang Over Alleged Defection Pressure
The Plateau State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to publicly name those allegedly pressuring him to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the APC.
Governor Mutfwang had reportedly told guests at a Government House event in Jos over the weekend that some APC members were courting him to defect. He, however, insisted that only divine guidance and the will of the people who elected him would influence such a decision.
“It is not a lie that they are putting pressure on me. But I told them that only two authorities could guide my decision to change party—the God of heaven and you, the people,” Mutfwang said. “Those rejecting me for what I did not seek are merely hiding their desires. In truth, 60 to 70 per cent of APC members would welcome us, but they know I will not join them.”
Reacting to the governor’s remarks in Jos on Monday, APC acting State Publicity Secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, dismissed the claim as “self-denial.” He argued that the governor was trying to shift attention from the challenges within his administration.
“If the governor had performed well for the people, there would be no need for talks of defection or political realignment,” Bamaiyi said. “He should publicly name those pressuring him and clarify his position. It is unusual for the opposition to object openly to a sitting governor joining its party, even when it aims to win future elections.”
The APC’s position reflects the ongoing political tension in Plateau State as stakeholders continue to monitor moves ahead of future elections.
