The Federal Capital Territory Executive Council (FCT EXCO), chaired by Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has approved projects and contracts worth over N20 billion to enhance service delivery across health, education, agriculture, infrastructure, environment, youth development, and public utilities in Abuja.
Briefing journalists after the fifth FCT EXCO meeting on Friday, the Chief of Staff to the Minister, Hon. Chidi Amadi, said 22 memoranda were deliberated, including 14 for contract awards and eight for ratification, all of which received unanimous approval.
“The Honourable Minister approved all 14 contract memos presented. The eight others were ratified. These decisions cover health, education, agriculture, environment, and infrastructure, reflecting the administration’s commitment to effective governance and inclusive development,” Amadi stated.
In a landmark development for healthcare, the Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, announced that Abuja will receive 12 state-of-the-art ambulances for the first time in nearly nine years. The Toyota Hiace Hiroof 2023–2024 models, procured at N1.74 billion, are expected to be commissioned soon.
“These ambulances, equipped with keyless entry, airbags, Bluetooth, and six-cylinder engines, will greatly enhance emergency response across the FCT, especially in suburban areas,” Fasawe said. She also noted that the 112 emergency number is now fully operational, linking residents to the nearest ambulance via the FCT Health Insurance Scheme, NEMSAS, and FEMA. She added that ambulances will no longer transport corpses, with dedicated hearses to be procured in the next budget.
In infrastructure, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, confirmed EXCO approved the construction of an alternative access road and resurfacing of the existing road to the old Federal Secretariat in Durumi. The project, considered urgent due to decades of neglect, is near completion by Interglobal Construction.
In agriculture, the Mandate Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Ango Abdullahi Suleman, revealed that EXCO ratified contracts for the supply of fertilizer (NPK and Urea) and other farm inputs, aimed at supporting FCT farmers and advancing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for food security.
The meeting also ratified Suleman’s redeployment from Youth and Sports Development to Agriculture and Rural Development to improve administrative efficiency.
In environmental management, the Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, confirmed EXCO approved the extension of the Jabi Pump Station service contract, ensuring the continuity of wastewater pre-treatment before discharge to the Wupa Treatment Plant.
Youth empowerment and education also received attention. EXCO approved the full renovation of the Nyanya Youth Centre, a hub for entrepreneurship and vocational training. For education, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, Mandate Secretary for Education, announced a N394.85 million contract to supply instructional materials for WAEC, NECO, and science practicals across 88 senior secondary schools.
Water supply projects worth over N9.5 billion were also approved by EXCO, including procurement of alum, gaseous chlorine, and diesel for the Lower Usuma Dam. The projects aim to ensure steady and quality water distribution throughout the FCT.
Amadi reiterated that the FCT Administration remains focused on transparency, efficiency, and impact-driven governance. “The council’s decisions reflect governance that works — from health to education, agriculture, and infrastructure,” he said.
