EFCC Secures 7,000 Convictions, Recovers N500bn in Two Years — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has obtained over 7,000 convictions and recovered assets exceeding N500 billion in the first two years of his administration.

Speaking on Monday at the seventh edition of the three-day capacity-building workshop for judges and justices in Abuja, organised by the EFCC in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, said the figures reflect the government’s dedication to fighting corruption while upholding judicial independence.

“The EFCC has recorded over seven thousand convictions in the first two years of my administration and recovered assets in excess of five hundred billion naira,” he said, adding that the recovered funds are being channelled into social investment initiatives, including student loans and consumer credit schemes.

The president emphasised that his administration has maintained a hands-off approach, allowing anti-graft agencies and the judiciary to function independently. “There is no person or group who can accuse this administration of shielding political actors based on their affiliation,” he stated.

Addressing judicial officers, Tinubu acknowledged public concern over delays in high-profile corruption cases compared with the swift conclusion of cybercrime matters. “The theme of this year’s workshop, ‘Enhancing Justice in the Fight Against Economic and Financial Crimes,’ is timely, as many are frustrated by delays in adjudicating serious corruption cases while cybercrime cases are resolved quickly,” he said.

He urged judges to uphold the integrity of the judiciary, describing it as “the last sanctuary of our collective conscience,” and called for continuous learning to address increasingly sophisticated financial crimes, from email fraud to cryptocurrency scams.

“A Nigeria free of corruption is possible if we all commit to doing what is right in our respective spheres of influence,” the president concluded.
