Adeleke Urges Politicians to Put People First, Strengthen Democracy

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has called on members of the political class, both within and outside government, to prioritise good governance as a means of restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.

Speaking shortly after his arrival in Nigeria on Sunday following a brief medical check-up abroad, Governor Adeleke said effective governance remains the true essence of politics and leadership.

“I’m glad to be back after a few days off. We are re-energised to continue the task of delivering good governance. That is the whole essence of politicking — service to the people,” he said.

Adeleke emphasised that political actors must place the interest of citizens above personal ambition, stressing that governance anchored on accountability, transparency, and respect for the rule of law is non-negotiable.

“Political class must deliver on good governance. We cannot joke with the rule of law. We must be accountable and transparent. We must serve only the interest of the people, not our selfish agenda,” he declared.

The governor added that political competition should never undermine public welfare, urging leaders to seek power solely to serve.

“Any fight over power must be within the rule of law and the welfare of the people. Any politics that hurts the people is condemnable,” Adeleke stated.

He further reiterated his condolence to the people of Akinlalu over the recent tragedy in the area, expressing confidence that the ongoing police investigation would ensure justice for the victims.

“I again condole with the people of Akinlalu. Investigation is ongoing and I assure the families of victims that justice will be done,” he said.
