Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has lauded the resignation of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, following allegations of discrepancies in his academic credentials.
Nnaji, appointed by President Bola Tinubu in August 2023, stepped down earlier this week after a Premium Times investigation alleged that he submitted forged academic and NYSC certificates during his ministerial screening.
In a statement shared on X on Thursday, Obi described the minister’s resignation as “a decent and honourable step” that underscores the importance of accountability in public office.
He said, “It is commendable that the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr Uche Nnaji, has resigned following the controversy surrounding discrepancies in his academic certificates. Such actions remind us that these matters are serious criminal offences and not trivial.”
Obi called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant agencies to verify the academic and professional qualifications of all political aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This process must cover all elective positions, from the presidency down to local government councillors. Dishonesty and forgery should have no place in leadership,” he added.
He further urged a comprehensive national review of the background verification process for public office holders, pointing to Ghana as an example of thorough credential checks. Obi emphasized that making academic documents publicly accessible should be mandatory for all incumbents and aspirants.
“Let truth, transparency, and accountability form the foundation of leadership in our country. Only then can Nigeria build a public service anchored on honour, not deceit. We must get it right,” Obi concluded.
