Vote-Buying Threatens Anambra Poll, ADC Candidate Warns INEC
As Anambra State prepares for its governorship election on November 8, 2025, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Mr. John Nwosu, has raised concerns about the growing menace of vote-buying, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take decisive action to safeguard the credibility of the poll.
In a statement on Saturday, Nwosu, one of 16 candidates cleared by INEC in June 2025, described the practice of voters selling their ballots as “baffling” and a direct threat to the democratic process.
“Such practices not only derail the true will of the people but reduce elections to an auction, where the state is effectively handed to the highest bidder,” he said.
Nwosu called on INEC to introduce secure voting cubicles and ensure that polling units are designed to protect voter privacy. According to him, exposed polling areas make it easier for party agents to engage in vote-buying and compromise the integrity of elections.
“Voting must remain secret. Nigeria already has strong electoral laws, which, if properly enforced, can deliver outcomes that truly benefit society,” he stressed.
He also highlighted the role of security agencies, emphasizing that their presence is crucial for free and fair elections. “While INEC carries the main responsibility, the Commission must work with security agencies to create an environment where citizens can participate freely and exercise their rights without fear or intimidation,” Nwosu added.
The ADC will be challenging incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), alongside other party candidates, in what observers view as a critical test for electoral transparency in Anambra State.
