Ogun Monarch Berates Fuji Star Taye Currency Over Olubadan Coronation Rendition
The Olu of Kemta Orile in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho, today faulted Fuji musician, Taye Currency, for what he described as “uncultured lyrics” rendered during the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan.
In a viral video, the artiste was heard chanting in Yoruba, “Were la fi n wo were” (madness is cured with madness), a line which has since triggered wide condemnation.
Oba Tejuosho, in a statement issued today, said the performance demeaned the sanctity of the throne and ridiculed a ceremony steeped in heritage and tradition.
“The throne of our ancestors is not a stage for mockery, nor is the coronation of a great monarch a subject for careless entertainment. Kingship is sacred, adorned with honour and guarded by tradition. It demands reverence, dignity and utmost respect from all who stand in its presence,” the monarch said.
He noted that the Olubadan’s coronation was not only a cultural milestone but also a national event that attracted dignitaries from across the country, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, royal fathers, diplomats and political leaders.
“Music at such gatherings is not mere noise but an offering of homage to history, culture and authority. To sing otherwise is to insult the crown and diminish the dignity of the gathering,” the monarch added.
Oba Tejuosho questioned the choice of artiste for the ceremony, wondering why more revered musicians such as King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey or Wasiu Ayinde (K1) were not considered. He added that if the organisers had wanted to showcase Oyo-born artistes, calmer Fuji icons like Rasheed Ayinde (Merengue) would have been more suitable.
The monarch concluded that the sacredness of the crown “remains untouchable” and must be approached with wisdom, restraint and respect.
