Obasanjo Best Since 1999, But a Bully, Says Osinbajo’s Ex-Aide
Former presidential spokesman, Laolu Akande, yesterday rated ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo as the most successful leader Nigeria has produced since the return of democracy in 1999.
Akande, who served as media aide to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, however, described Obasanjo as a political bully who deployed strong-arm tactics to push his controversial third term agenda.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources, Akande said Obasanjo “cannot be denied the credit of running the most successful administration since 1999,” but noted that his domineering style was central to his politics.
His words:
“Ex-President Obasanjo is about the best-performing president since 1999. We cannot deny that. And it’s not easy even for me to say that because I saw another administration. But so far, Obasanjo’s administration remains the most successful.
“We must also understand his strategy. He knew he had the bully pulpit and he used it effectively. He raised a loud voice, knowing those who would have countered him didn’t have an equally loud voice.”
Obasanjo has consistently denied seeking a third term in office. However, reports have long alleged that he attempted to induce the National Assembly to amend the constitution to allow him remain in power beyond 2007, a move that was fiercely resisted by lawmakers.
