Tinubu boosts ₦464bn South East highway project with fresh funding

The Federal Government has increased funding for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ₦464 billion legacy road project in the South East to 50 per cent.

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed this yesterday during an inspection of sections of the Enugu–Onitsha dual carriageway in Enugu State.

Umahi said the project, a 123-kilometre stretch, had earlier received 30 per cent payment, with an additional 20 per cent recently approved by the President.

The minister noted that the Tinubu administration was committed to inclusive infrastructure renewal, stressing that the South East, like other zones, was already reaping the benefits of the President’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

According to him, projects such as the Second Niger Bridge, key road corridors, and the new design models being implemented nationwide represent “a vision in action” for sustainable connectivity and road durability.

He commended the contractors for the quality of work on the descoped sections of the Enugu–Onitsha dualization, adding that the South East would witness more transformative road projects across its five states.

“The President has already paid 30 per cent. He has now approved another 20 per cent, just like in other regions. We have every reason to be grateful,” Umahi said.

He assured that with sustained support for the administration, the ongoing legacy projects across the six geopolitical zones would be completed within the President’s tenure, noting: “Nigeria will never be the same again.”
