Kano State Moves to Tackle Mathematics Teacher Shortage

The Kano State Government has approved the recruitment of additional mathematics teachers to bridge the shortage in public secondary schools across the state.

The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, during the distribution of admission letters to Senior Secondary School One (SS1) students at Maryam Aloma Girls’ Secondary School in Kano.

Dr. Makoda said the recruitment drive is part of the administration’s broader efforts to provide free, quality education and mobilise community support for the sector. He highlighted reforms under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s leadership, including teacher recruitment, school renovations, and provision of learning materials.

He also credited the governor’s prioritisation of education for Kano’s top performance in the 2025 NECO examinations. “The governor is determined to take all necessary steps to strengthen the state’s education system,” Makoda stated.

Rabi’u Gwarzo, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, also praised the governor’s commitment, noting that it played a significant role in the state’s educational achievements.

The event drew participation from key stakeholders, including Zonal Directors, Ministry of Education officials, members of the Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, the State Universal Basic Education Board, and parent-teacher representatives, all of whom commended the government’s efforts and pledged continued support.

Dr. Makoda urged parents to enrol their children in schools to ensure access to quality education, emphasising that community engagement remains critical to sustaining improvements in the sector.
