No Life Presidency! ADC Warns Tinubu Ahead of 2027

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has fired back at the Presidency over claims that President Bola Tinubu has no plans to extend his tenure beyond 2031, describing the assertion as presumptuous and undemocratic.

In a statement on Tuesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, insisted that Tinubu’s mandate ends in 2027, stressing that Nigerians would not support any extension of his stay in office.

“The President should be preparing to leave in 2027,” Abdullahi said, citing worsening security and socio-economic challenges across the country. “Any attempt to remain in office beyond that date would confirm that this government is out of touch with reality.”

The opposition party’s reaction followed a clarification by the Presidency after former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam El-Rufai, accused Tinubu of plotting to become a “life president.” The Presidency countered, saying Tinubu would not stay beyond 2031, implying a second term from 2027 to 2031.

According to the ADC, the Presidency’s statement only underscores the administration’s detachment from public sentiment.

“Re-election is not automatic. In just two years, Tinubu has deepened national divisions, worsened poverty, and presided over escalating insecurity,” the party said. “Bandits now control large areas of the North, and citizens face kidnappings and attacks with impunity.”

The party also highlighted the nation’s faltering economy, pointing to the collapsed naira, runaway inflation, and the disappearance of the middle class. “Businesses are collapsing under punitive taxes, and the power sector remains comatose despite billions spent. Blackouts have become routine,” the ADC added.

On social development, the party noted Nigeria’s Human Development Index continues to decline, while education and healthcare systems deteriorate. Youth unemployment and hopelessness are rising, even as government interventions remain largely cosmetic.

The ADC further condemned human rights abuses, including harassment of journalists and brutal treatment of peaceful protesters. “Transparency and accountability have become relics of a forgotten era,” Abdullahi said, citing wasteful spending, budget padding, and opaque loans as defining features of the Tinubu administration.

While warning against the concept of a “life president,” the ADC stressed that Nigeria is not Lagos, where Tinubu wielded significant influence. “Nigerians are watching, and come 2027, it will not be APC versus ADC; it will be APC versus the Nigerian people,” the party added.
