Abia State Launches Advanced Material Testing Lab to Boost Infrastructure Quality

The Abia State Government has commissioned a state-of-the-art material testing laboratory in Umuahia as part of its efforts to enhance the quality of engineering and construction projects across the state.

Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, disclosed on Monday that the laboratory is fully operational and offers comprehensive services including concrete, soil, aggregate, and asphalt testing, as well as steel reinforcement checks, non-destructive testing, and field evaluations.

“The laboratory is fully installed and operational. This facility will ensure that engineering and building projects in Abia meet the highest standards of quality,” Kanu said during the weekly press briefing.

In addition to the lab, the state government is reviving Abia Hotel Limited in Umuahia. According to Kanu, the recovery process of the facility has reached an advanced stage, with further updates expected to be shared soon.

Other initiatives by the state include the Abia TechRise ICT Training Program, aimed at equipping youths with technology-related skills. The program is scheduled to commence on September 25, 2025.

The government is also implementing the Agricultural Intervention Project, which involves constructing prototype markets in all 17 local government areas. Each market will feature 40 solar-powered stalls, providing employment and empowerment opportunities for residents.

Additionally, Abia will host the Abia Soccerfest and the International Leaders’ Summit between September 22 and 25, 2025, under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

The material testing laboratory and these initiatives are part of Abia State’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and empower its citizens.
