APC Slams Oyo Govt Over N110m Falconets Spending Amid Healthcare Woes

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has condemned the state government’s plan to spend N110 million on hosting a football match between Nigeria’s Under-20 female team and Rwanda, calling it “insensitive” and a “misplaced priority.”

In a statement made available to Patriotic Insight News on Monday, the APC’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare, criticized Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration for allocating such a large sum to sports while the state’s healthcare sector suffers from chronic underfunding.

Sadare said hospitals in the state often lack essential equipment such as X-ray machines and ambulances, describing these as “luxuries” in most facilities. He added that qualified medical personnel are leaving government service in large numbers due to negligence and the administration’s high-handed approach.

He stated, “It is a height of insensitivity for a government that cannot value the lives of its citizens to prioritize spending on a football project that belongs to the federal government. The emergency decision to host the match at the low-quality Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, backed with a N110 million budget, raises serious questions that demand answers.”

The APC also noted that the match had already been included in the 2025 budget of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) through the Nigerian Sports Commission, with no request from the NFF or federal government for Oyo State’s intervention.

“The Makinde administration should focus resources on improving healthcare services instead of financing events that are not its responsibility,” Sadare added.
