CJN to Inaugurate 57 New Senior Advocates Sept 29

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will on Monday, September 29, administer the oath of office on 57 newly elevated Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).

The ceremony, billed for the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court in Abuja, forms part of activities heralding the commencement of the 2025/2026 legal year.

A statement yesterday by the Supreme Court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Festus Akande, said the CJN will also present her “State of the Judiciary” address, reviewing the performance of the apex court during the 2024/2025 legal year and highlighting developments across the justice sector.

“In line with long-standing tradition, the CJN will deliver a State of the Judiciary address with a view to highlighting the state of the Supreme Court in particular, and the Nigerian Judiciary in general, in the 2024/2025 legal year,” the statement added.

Other key figures expected to speak at the special session include the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association. Their presentations are expected to focus on justice sector reforms and challenges.

The apex court recalled that it proceeded on its annual vacation on July 21 after what it described as a “remarkably successful” legal year.

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee had on July 24 released the list of 57 successful applicants for the SAN rank. Fifty-six of them are advocates in active practice, while one was elevated on academic grounds.

The court announced that the programme will commence at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 29.
