Osun PDP elects ward executives in 214 councils, assures hitch-free congress

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State yesterday conducted ward congresses to elect new executives in 214 out of 332 wards across the state, with the leadership of the party pledging a peaceful and transparent exercise.

Chairman of the 2025 Ward Congress Committee, Dr. Samuel Omotoso, who spoke at the state secretariat in Osogbo before the exercise commenced, said the congress would only hold in wards where executives’ tenure had expired.

Omotoso explained that the aim of the congress was to prevent a vacuum in the party’s grassroots structure. He noted that the staggered nature of the process was a result of logistics and tenure variations from previous congresses.

“We are conducting ward congresses in 214 wards because of the expiration of some officials’ terms. Those elected today will serve a four-year term, which is distinct from the congress held in 2023. That is why the exercise is not simultaneous across all wards,” he stated.

The state chairman of the PDP, Hon. Sunday Bisi, confirmed that adequate security arrangements had been made in partnership with the police, DSS, Amotekun, Civil Defence and other agencies to guarantee a hitch-free process.

“We have ensured that the atmosphere is conducive for the congress. On Friday, I met with the Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS, and both mobilised their officers to provide cover for the exercise. Security will be tight across the affected wards,” Bisi said.

Observers say the successful conduct of the ward congress is a significant step towards stabilising the Osun PDP after years of internal discord. Since 2017, disagreements over ward congresses had deepened factional rivalries within the party.

Recently, reconciliation efforts in Ife Federal Constituency helped douse lingering tensions. Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi and other leaders confirmed that divisions in the constituency had been resolved, describing the earlier crisis as “a storm in a teacup.”

Governor Ademola Adeleke, who played a central role in the peace talks, attributed the conflict to communication gaps and urged stakeholders to remain united in preparation for future electoral contests.

Political observers note that beyond rebuilding trust, the PDP is already looking ahead to the 2026 governorship election in Osun, where internal cohesion will be vital to consolidating its hold on power. Analysts argue that ward-level unity will not only strengthen the party’s base for that contest but also position it more favourably for the 2027 general elections.

With the ruling APC also grappling with its own internal disputes in the state, party watchers suggest that whoever manages grassroots mobilisation more effectively will likely have the upper hand in Osun’s political battles over the next two years.
