FCT Confirms Ebola-Free Status, Dispels Rumours of Outbreak

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has dismissed reports of a suspected Ebola outbreak in Abuja, assuring residents that the territory remains free of the deadly virus.

Dr Dolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Secretariat, disclosed on Friday that a suspected case tested negative for both Ebola and Marburg viruses. She described the prompt testing and containment measures as a demonstration of the territory’s robust health infrastructure.

According to Dr Fasawe, the suspected patient, referred to as “Patient X” for confidentiality, recently travelled from Rwanda, a country bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Ebola cases have been confirmed. The patient sought immediate medical attention upon feeling unwell and was isolated following infectious disease protocols. Health authorities were promptly notified.

“This is not the first suspected case we have encountered this year. Thanks to our effective surveillance system, we have been able to follow protocols more efficiently than other states,” Dr Fasawe said.

She further revealed that the FCT Health Secretariat is collaborating closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to monitor all entry points, particularly airports, to prevent the importation of infectious diseases.

Dr Fasawe urged the public to verify reports before sharing information to avoid unnecessary panic and stigmatisation. She also reminded residents to seek medical attention promptly for any unusual symptoms.

“Not every fever is malaria. If you notice abnormal bleeding from the nose, eyes, ears, or other areas, it is a medical emergency. Report to the nearest health centre immediately,” she advised.

The FCTA’s clarification comes amid heightened public concern following unverified reports of Ebola in the nation’s capital.
