Wike Approves All Demands of FCT Resident Doctors, Hails Strike Suspension

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has approved all outstanding requests by resident doctors, who had recently embarked on a strike over unpaid salary arrears.

Speaking on Friday during the launch of the Northern Parkway construction project, stretching from Ring Road II to Ring III along Shehu Yar’Adua Way, Life Camp, Abuja, Wike said all files relating to the doctors’ demands have been signed and directed the FCT Acting Head of Service and his Senior Special Adviser on Administration, Samuel Atang, to implement the approvals immediately.

“I must commend the resident doctors for calling off the strike. The administration is pleased with their understanding. I have signed all the doctors’ requests on my table today,” Wike said, describing their return to work as a patriotic decision that places the welfare of patients and the FCT above personal grievances.

The resident doctors had commenced their industrial action on September 15, citing unresolved negotiations with the FCT Administration. Their demands included payment of salary arrears ranging from one to six months for members employed since 2023, immediate recruitment of new staff, settlement of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, and arrears from the 25–35 per cent upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

Other issues raised by the doctors included irregular salary payments, erroneous deductions, delayed skipping and conversion processes, 13 months’ hazard allowance arrears, wage award arrears, and outstanding payments to 2025 external residents.

On the road project, Wike stated that the Northern Parkway construction would reduce traffic congestion, create jobs, and stimulate economic activities within the FCT.
