Oluwo’s Aide Advises Ataoja to Verify Yoruba History with Osogbo Elders
The Chief Press Secretary to the Oluwo of Iwo, Alli Ibraheem, has urged the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun Laaroye III, to consult knowledgeable elders of Osogbo for accurate historical information rather than misrepresenting the hierarchy of Yoruba traditional stools.
Ibraheem reacted to a viral video in which the Ataoja allegedly made claims about the ranking of traditional stools. He described the remarks as “disappointing and misleading,” but stressed they were unlikely to cause friction between Iwo and Osogbo.
According to Ibraheem, the clarification was necessary to defend the ancient Oluwo stool and prevent the distortion of Yoruba history, which could mislead future generations. He noted that Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo, is a natural paramount ruler whose lineage traces directly to Oduduwa.
“The Oluwo of Iwoland will not contend or compete with anyone,” Ibraheem said. “Seniority is not determined by chair. The Oluwo holds deep respect for Osogbo and its people and has chosen not to engage in historical rivalry with the Ataoja, as their heritage is distinct.”
He also highlighted the historical contributions of Iwo warriors, including Balogun Ali-Iwo, Basorun Ogunmola, and Balogun Oderinlo, who defended Osogbo during the Fulani invasions, and referenced the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who affirmed the Oluwo’s authority.
Ibraheem concluded by emphasizing the importance of preserving Yoruba heritage and encouraged the Ataoja to rely on credible sources to avoid misrepresenting history.
