Omisore’s Entry Intensifies APC Crisis in Osun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has plunged into deeper crisis over the choice of its governorship candidate ahead of the 2026 elections.

Until recently, the party appeared divided among several aspirants, including Bola Oyebanji, Director General of the National Inland Waterways Authority; Basiru Ajibola, National Secretary of the party; Prince Dotun Babayemi, a legal practitioner; Kunle Adegoke, Senior Advocate of Nigeria; and former Senator Jide Omoworare, each commanding distinct factions of supporters.

The situation shifted last week when former Deputy Governor Iyiola Omisore publicly declared his intention to contest, claiming the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Omisore’s announcement reportedly swayed some supporters of Oyebanji, widely regarded as the anointed candidate of former Governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, to rally behind him.

Ajibola Famurewa, a former House of Representatives member and party leader now campaigning for Omisore, criticized the party’s leadership for rewarding individuals who had not contributed to party growth. He said, “Only a fool will keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. We must return the party to its grassroots. The ward chairmen own the party. If we continue the old ways, we will not achieve success.

“When we lost in 2022, a committee led by Professor Isaac Adewole recommended restructuring the party and rewarding those who genuinely work for it. Implementing these recommendations is crucial for future victories.”

Meanwhile, concerns about the party’s readiness for the next elections continue to grow. Ismail Omipidan, a former spokesman to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, warned on social media: “2026: I pity Osun APC. Where are the elders? Two wrongs don’t make a right. The earlier the party applies the brakes, the better.”

Other stakeholders have also expressed apprehension over the party’s direction as it prepares for the 2026 polls, warning that unresolved internal conflicts could undermine its chances of victory.
