NECO releases 2025 SSCE results, 60% secure five credits including English, Maths

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results, 54 days after the last paper was written.

Announcing the results in Minna, Niger State, Registrar of the Council, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, said a total of 1,358,339 candidates sat for the examination, out of which 818,492 candidates, representing 60.26 per cent, scored five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

According to him, 1,144,496 candidates, representing 84.26 per cent, obtained five credits and above irrespective of English and Mathematics.

Wushishi disclosed that 1,367,210 candidates registered for the examination – 685,514 males and 681,696 females – while 1,358,339 eventually sat.

He noted that 1,622 candidates with special needs participated in the examination, comprising 941 with hearing impairment and 191 with visual impairment, among others.

On malpractice, the Registrar said 3,878 candidates were caught, a significant drop compared to 10,094 in 2024, representing a 61.58 per cent reduction. He added that 38 schools in 13 states were indicted for mass cheating and would face sanctions, while nine supervisors from Rivers, Niger, FCT, Kano and Osun states have been recommended for blacklisting.

Wushishi also drew attention to eight schools in Lamorde Local Government Area of Adamawa State where examinations were disrupted by communal clashes between July 7 and 25, affecting 13 subjects and 29 papers. Discussions are ongoing with the state government to conduct fresh examinations for the affected schools.

On state performance, Kano led with 68,159 candidates (5.02 per cent) securing five credits and above including English and Mathematics. Lagos followed with 67,007 candidates (4.93 per cent), while Oyo placed third with 48,742.

The least performing centre was Gabon, where no candidate secured five credits including English and Mathematics.

Wushishi also disclosed that, in line with the ongoing curriculum review, NECO will henceforth examine only 38 subjects to reduce waiting time for results.

The Council has also commenced a phased transition from the paper-pencil test model to a computer-based test format, with some public and private schools already participating in the pilot phase.
