NBTE to Clamp Down on Fake Polytechnics, Reassures on Quality Education

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has reaffirmed its resolve to sustain the clampdown on unaccredited institutions masquerading as polytechnics across the country.

Director of Polytechnic and Allied Programmes at NBTE, Dr. Fatimah Kabir Umar, gave the assurance during the agency’s accreditation visit to Harvarde College of Science, Business and Management Studies, Obada, Abeokuta.

She warned that mushroom entities lacking proper facilities, qualified staff and approved curricula would not be allowed to jeopardise students’ futures or undermine the Federal Government’s commitment to qualitative education.

“We have been fighting against mushroom entities calling themselves what they are not. We won’t stop in the interest of safeguarding what is best for the nation,” Umar said.

She noted that despite challenges, polytechnic education remains on the right track, stressing that the sector continues to play a pivotal role in upscaling skills acquisition for national development.

“Yes, knowledge is good, but in terms of execution, polytechnic education has been leading, and that is why it has remained relevant to building a more prosperous nation,” she added.

The accreditation team assessed science and management programmes such as Business Administration, Computer Science (including Software Development and Cybersecurity), among others. Umar commended the college’s facilities and infrastructure but urged lecturers to improve personal development by joining professional bodies, publishing journals, and staying current in their fields.

She praised the institution’s management for complementing government’s effort in tertiary education delivery and encouraged them to continue investing in excellence.

Provost and founder of the college, Dr. Oluwatosin Adebayo, said NBTE was at the school for resource inspection and accreditation of about eight programmes, including Film and Multimedia Production, Journalism and Media Studies, Accountancy, Law, Networking and Cloud Computing, as well as Software and Web Development.

He explained that the visit, which also covered accreditation of Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, was a routine quality assurance measure.

“This is part of the way the NBTE operates; every two years, they visit schools for accreditation. It ensures compliance, and we are happy to welcome the team, confident that we have been doing what is required of us,” Adebayo stated.

He reiterated the college’s commitment to continuous investment in quality learning and maintaining high standards in line with NBTE guidelines.
