NiMet forecasts three-day thunderstorms, rainfall nationwide
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rainfall across parts of the country from Monday through Wednesday.
According to the agency’s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected on Monday morning in Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states.
The forecast added that flash floods are likely in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe states. Later in the afternoon and evening, more thunderstorms are expected across the northern region.
For the central region, a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is expected on Monday morning, with moderate rainfall in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the FCT, and Benue. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are also forecast later in the day.
In the South, cloudy skies are expected on Monday morning, with moderate rains in Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. Rains are also likely across most parts of the region later in the day.
On Tuesday, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are expected in the North, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains in Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa. In the afternoon and evening, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Taraba states will experience thunderstorms with moderate rainfall.
The central region will witness cloudy skies with sunshine intervals on Tuesday morning, with rains expected in Kogi, Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa, and the FCT. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast over Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the FCT.
In the southern region, cloudy skies with chances of moderate rains are expected on Tuesday morning in Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta states, with light to moderate rains later in the day.
On Wednesday, NiMet predicted cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the North, with light rains in Sokoto and Zamfara during the morning hours. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are, however, expected in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto later in the day.
The central region will also experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals on Wednesday morning, with light rains in the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are forecast in Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger states.
Cloudy skies and moderate rains are also expected across the southern region on Wednesday.
NiMet cautioned motorists against driving during heavy rainfall and advised farmers to avoid applying fertiliser or pesticides just before rainfall to prevent nutrient loss.
Residents were urged to fasten loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances, and avoid tall trees during thunderstorms. Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective operational planning.
The agency further encouraged Nigerians to monitor weather updates regularly for safety and proper planning.
