New PTML Customs Comptroller pledges tough stance on smuggling, faster cargo clearance

The newly appointed Customs Area Comptroller of Ports and Terminal Multipurpose Limited (PTML), Comptroller Joe Anani, has assured stakeholders that his administration will sustain zero tolerance for smuggling while prioritising trade facilitation and efficiency at the command.

Anani made the pledge during his takeover ceremony from the immediate past Controller, Assistant Comptroller-General (ACG) Tenny Daniyan, who was recently promoted alongside 11 others at the 63rd regular meeting of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Board.

In his maiden address, the new CAC urged port users to embrace compliance as a way to achieve faster cargo clearance and strengthen Nigeria’s global trade competitiveness.

> “The keyword here is compliance. With improved compliance and an efficient system, clearance can be achieved in less than two hours. Non-compliance, on the other hand, attracts interventions, seizures, detentions and even arrests,” Anani said.

He commended Daniyan for leading the deployment of the Unified Customs Management System, also known as B’Odogwu, at PTML and pledged to consolidate the achievements recorded under his tenure.

“I am not here to do it alone. This journey to success must remain a collective task. I call on all customs officers, sister agencies, private sector stakeholders, and the media to support our goal of sustaining PTML as a model port of excellence,” he added.

Stakeholders present at the ceremony praised Daniyan for his performance and leadership. President of the African Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria, Frank Ogunojemite, described him as “a man whose records speak volumes,” while PTML chapter chairman of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents, Charles Nwarrienne, hailed his role in consolidating the B’Odogwu project.

Anani reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining accessibility and collaboration, stressing that compliance-driven operations would enhance revenue generation, improve security, and strengthen trust among port users.

With his assumption of duty, stakeholders expressed optimism that PTML would continue to lead in cargo clearance, trade facilitation, and port efficiency.
