Iwo Flooding: Adeleke Pledges Support, Orders Environmental Assessment

Massive flooding in Iwo, Osun State, on Friday following hours of heavy rainfall has left residents grappling with property loss and displacement. Governor Ademola Adeleke has expressed sympathy for the affected communities and assured them of government support.

In a statement, the governor described the damage as “monumental” and vowed to take measures to safeguard lives and property. “On behalf of the State Government, I convey heartfelt sympathy to everyone affected. We stand with the people of Iwo in this difficult moment and will provide all necessary support to help them recover,” he said.

Governor Adeleke noted that his administration had already initiated flood prevention measures, including dredging the Aiba waterways to ensure proper drainage. In response to the recent flood, he has directed the Commissioner for Environment to carry out an on-the-spot assessment and recommend lasting solutions to prevent future occurrences.

Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor’s spokesperson, urged community cooperation to reduce the risk of future flooding. “We urge the people of Iwo and all residents of Osun State to support government efforts by stopping the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into waterways. Together, we can reduce the risk of future flooding,” he said.

The government’s proactive approach comes amid growing concerns over the impact of climate change and urban drainage challenges in Osun State.
