2027 Polls: Nigeria Risks Nepal-Style Unrest Without Reforms, Timi Frank Warns
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has cautioned that Nigeria could face unrest similar to the recent political crisis in Nepal if the 2027 general elections are not credible.
Frank, in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to embark on urgent reforms that would guarantee free, fair, and transparent polls. He warned that without ethical leadership from electoral and security institutions, the country risks sliding into violent protests reminiscent of the #EndSARS demonstrations of 2020.
He also called for the appointment of a new INEC chairman with proven integrity as the tenure of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu winds down.
Frank appealed to the international community, particularly United States President Donald Trump, to mount pressure on the Nigerian government, the National Assembly, and INEC to prioritise credible electoral reforms.
According to him, “Let the US impose stiffer sanctions on judges, justices, and INEC officials who compromise the electoral process. We align with Donald Trump’s position on enthroning true democracy across Africa.”
The activist further cautioned security agencies against what he described as their “usual role” of aiding electoral malpractices. Instead, he charged them to provide adequate security for voters and ensure peaceful elections.
“Failure to do so,” Frank said, “could push Nigeria into a crisis worse than Nepal’s, especially considering the country’s challenges of poverty, unemployment, and governance failures.”
