Nigeria has suffered from lousy leaders for too long – Sanusi
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has lamented Nigeria’s leadership failures, saying the country has been unfortunate with “lousy leaders” for decades.
Speaking at the second Kano International Poetry Festival (KAPFEST) held in Kano on Saturday, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor said Nigeria’s rise and fall is tied to the quality of its leadership.
“You rise and fall with the quality of your leadership, and Nigeria has had lousy leadership for a long time. You cannot give what you do not have. Until we begin to look closely at those we choose to lead us, we will remain stuck,” he said.
Sanusi, who backed the removal of fuel subsidy, argued that without the policy, the country would have been bankrupt by now.
He bemoaned the nature of debates at the legislature, describing them as petty and a waste of time.
“In most parts of this country, you look at people leading you and you ask yourself, ‘Is this really the person? How did we end up here?’ You see it daily in the news and on the pages of newspapers — the kind of arguments and time wasted on irrelevant issues,” he stated.
The Emir urged Nigerian youths to rise and take charge of the country, insisting they have the capacity to retire the old political class and provide the leadership the nation needs.
