NEMA assesses storm-hit community in Sokoto
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of households affected by the recent heavy rainfall and windstorm that ravaged Akija community in Sokoto South Local Government Area.
The assessment, led by NEMA’s Planning Officer, Tukur Abubakar, took place yesterday and focused on evaluating the extent of damage to homes and properties.
Many residents, left homeless by the incident, expressed appreciation for the agency’s swift intervention, saying it rekindled their hope of receiving relief materials and government support.
The Member representing Sokoto South Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Aminu Gidado Jegawa, who joined the officials during the visit, hailed the effort as a “timely and compassionate intervention.”
Jegawa urged the agency to extend similar assessments to other wards and communities in Sokoto South that had also been affected by flooding and windstorms in recent weeks.
“We have received several complaints from residents in different parts of the local government. I appeal to NEMA to replicate this effort in those areas as well,” he said.
The lawmaker further pledged to present the matter before the Sokoto State House of Assembly to mobilise additional support for the victims.
The visit forms part of NEMA’s broader efforts to mitigate the impact of recurrent natural disasters across northern states, where communities continue to battle the twin challenges of flooding and windstorms.
